A childhood friend of mine in my neighborhood
called Kingley going to the same school and attending the same church with me
could not forget a day he fell from a mango tree not too far from my dwelling. Kingsley
and I used to go to school together in the morning and waited for each other
after closing hour so that we could come home together being the fact that we
were living in the same neighborhood and our parents because of us were also
friends.
I could remember vividly we were in
Senior Secondary School 1 then when we noticed that there was a tall mango tree
not far from my house. Then was the season of mango, apart from the mango trees
that we used to visit after school hour to pluck the ripe ones, we also paid
visit to the nearby ones. Sometimes, we went to pluck ripe mango on our way
home and ate all so that we would not be suspicious and beaten. This did not
affect our house chores even my friend used to hawk after school hour while I
would wash dirty plates we used in the morning when rushing to school. This was
how we were plucking the ripe mangoes around without the consent of our
parents.
One day, I did not go to school
because I was ill but Kingsley went and on his way home, he branched at the
mango tree not too far from my house to pluck the ripe mangoes. On getting
there, he saw three ripe mangoes at the top of the trees, he continuously threw
sticks to them but he could not get them, then he decided to climb this tree
and found his way to the top of the tree where these ripe mangoes were hung not
knowing that what was good was not meant for a single person. When he got
there, he met a snake and he was seriously scared therefore rushing down from
the tree but because he was frightened, one of his hands missed the tree and he
fell. When he got down, he even thought he was dead because the tree branches
with the leaves beat him mercilessly on his way down but he was able to walk
again with his eyes red and his school uniform dirty and torn.
I was
outside the house when he was coming from this mango tree and narrated his
ordeal. What a pity!
