There
were lots of enjoyment and sadness in my childhood. Many moments were
interesting and good to be remembered while some were so pathetic to be
forgotten. Although, I had learnt my lessons but I can't do without
recollecting what had happened then. For instance, there was a day during our
struggling time as boys in my neighborhood; we went to do a menial job in order
to keep body and soul together outside the city and at the same time to help
our parents with little expenses. Whereas that was not the first time of going
out for such outing but this particular day will never be erased from my
memory.
This type
of menial job was a lumbering form. Matured trees were found in the outskirt of
the State so we traveled many kilometers away from the city. The amount of
money each person made per trip depended on the number of sliced planks each
person was able to carry from where they were
sliced to the place where they would be transported to the market with respect
to the distance. As usual, we met the sliced
planks on ground but they were not
as many as expected while the operator was still cutting and slicing the trees,
we were moving those ones on ground but not quite long, we finished carrying
those ones on ground and we started waiting for the ones the operator was
slicing.
One of
us could not wait and he was dragging the plank with the operator having the
moving equipment, in the process the moving saw cut his hand and the blood
started oozing out from the opening and was quickly rushed from the bush into
the car of the owner of the business which transported him to the nearby
hospital for urgent medical attention.
The news
of this ugly incident had quickly got to the ears of the people at home. My
friend was hospitalized for three days before he was discharged to go home for
proper rest. This job came to a halt for two weeks to sympathize with him.
Everybody in this group felt for him because during this period he could not do
anything. He was much incapacitated to the core. Had he known he would not have
dragged the plank with the moving saw!
